The Departed (2006)
The Departed is a 2006 film by Martin Scorsese. Elements of the plot revolve around the mob, but it has a much different feel from a typical mob flick. It won four Oscars in 2007. Including best director and best picture
I really liked the Departed and not just because all of the characters are offed. I liked the plot very much. It was smartly done and there was no way to see anything coming. In particular, I liked the scene out of the adult theatre where each of the informants are trying to spot the other while at the same time not being marked themselves. I really just liked this movie. I was rooting for our protagonist and I was shocked as they come out of the elevator to him being shot by a third mole. Then the other two murders occurring back to back right there are almost as shocking. After that point, you had the idea that Sullivan was going to get what was coming to him and he inevitably did. I typically like characters dying at the end of movies, but I was indifferent to the death here. It wasn’t a way to end a mess of a plot as there were lots of avenues open at the resolution. I think it was there to serve the theme of there being no one favored and justice non-existent.
“One of us had to die. With me, it tends to be the other guy.”
