Up in the Air (2009)

“Up in the Air” was directed by Jason Reitman. Reitman also directed two other films I liked “Juno” and “Thank You for Smoking”.  Reitman is a second generation director, his father directed “Ghostbusters”.

Up in the Air (2009)

Up in the Air is about a corporate down-sizer Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), who travels from place to place firing people. In Bingham travels he meets another frequent flyer named Alex Goren (Vera Farmiga) and they begin a casual relationship. Then Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick) comes up with a plan to cut costs by conducting layoffs over the Internet, ending the travel. So Keener is sent out on the road with Bingham to learn the ropes and test her plan.

The movie’s title  really points out what this movie is all about. Bingham goes from place to place, living out of suitcase with no ties, his life is really up in the air. His job is to fire people, cutting them loose and putting them, up in the air.  Most of the people fired talking about falling back on their family, their life outside of work grounds them.  So while their prospects of money/job is up in the air, they are still grounded. Events in Bingham’s life start to clue him in on how much he’s adrift. This movie is up for several awards, rightfully so.   The story flows and the movie don’t sell out at the end.

“I’m like my mother, I stereotype. It’s faster.”

08/10——Enjoyed it, well made movie with a real life message–it’s todays “Meet John Doe”.
