The Village (2004)

The Village is a film from M. Night Shyamalan.  It has the twists that we all expect from one of his features.  It is the tale of a village and its inhabitants who are afraid of what is beyond their township.

Many people did not like this film.  I liked it just fine.  I enjoyed the twist at the end of it.  I like the concept of chosen seclusion from a distaste of society.  I also liked how our setting makes it seem like a story of fantasy and not something plausible.  It was somewhat held back in my opinion, because some of the actions are not believable since they have to maintain the plot twist.  For instance, it seemed a little strange that they would send a blind girl with no one accompanying her.  I did not quite understand why one of the adults would not go with her.   It was an interesting film without the gimmick in my opinion, but the gimmick did not take anything from the movie.  Shyamalan’s films always leave a bitter self-aggrandizing residue when they twist.  It bothers me to some point, but not overly.  Overall, I enjoyed the movie and found it entertaining.  The twist was clever and while arrogant, it did not harm the film that extensively.
